Thousands of Idaho records will be accessible for the public due to collaboration between the Idaho State Archives and Ancestry.

“This relationship allows us to give Idaho citizens digital access to their historical records, making it easier for anyone in our state to conduct family or historical research,” said Janet Gallimore, executive director of the Idaho State Historical Society. “This collaborative effort allows us to better preserve the state’s historical collections through reduced handling, which also provides long-term conservation cost savings.”

While the scanning process just started recently, the Idaho State Archives expects the project to be completed in the next six months. Birth records, death records and prison records are being scanned as part of the process.

In the past, those doing research had to dig through boxes of material to find what they were looking for, but when the scanning project is complete, keyword search will be available for the records. This will make searches faster while preserving the integrity of the original documents.

The public computers in the Idaho State Archives are now connected to Ancestry Institution, allowing visitors to explore some historical records available through Ancestry. For information, visit history.idaho.gov/idaho-state-archives.
